Expanding Your Business Through Marketing & Technology

How Solar Velocity is remaining successful in this current economy

clock October 15, 2008 16:59 by author Admin

Flexibility has been the key for Solar Velocity, LLC’s success amid the soft economy. As a result, business for the 21-employee firm, which specializes in marketing and Web technologies, is up 20 percent over last year.

CO-founder and CEO Jason Swenk said the Atlanta-based company has widened its focus over the years, moving away from real estate and mortgage Web sites into such areas as building e-commerce sites for retail clients.

“Even in a bad market, there’s always going to be a good market for someone,” Swenk said. “With skyrocketing gas prices, a lot more people are shopping online, and companies want to develop tools for them. If we were focusing on just homebuilders and the real estate market, we’d probably be out of business by now.”

Added Swenk, “We’ve also come up with many interactive campaigns that are cost-effective and show a higher return on investment, where most agencies are focusing on traditional marketing tactics.”

Still another key step, he said, has been to take advantage of the weak dollar to boost international business. Roughly 35 percent of Solar Velocity’s business is building e-commerce sites, he said.

Swenk has had to counter the natural tendency of businesses to curtail marketing efforts in a downturn and simply wait for the economy to rebound.

"That’s a bad mistake", he said. “The companies that do that just keep spiraling down. They put their business in the market’s hands rather than in their own….I tell companies, ‘Even a whisper can be heard if no one else is advertising.’ “

Motorsports Marketing, Solar Velocity and the Petit Le Mans

clock October 3, 2008 09:18 by author sburkey
Solar Velocity attended the qualification events for the Petit Le Mans on October 2, 2008 at Road Atlanta.

Jason Swenk, Co-Founder of Solar Velocity and I (Scott Burkey, Director of Business Development for Solar Velocity), spent the day at Road Atlanta discussing marketing and sponsorship concepts with both race team owners and motorsports product companies.

One of the true priveleges of the day that we had was being hosted by the Walker Racing Team (www.walkerracing.com) out of Indianapolis, Indiana. Les Channen, the Team Manager, was a wealth of information and a great guy that spent a lot of time with us in between qualification events and managing the crew in the tech area. Derrick Walker, team owner, spent some time with us sharing his insight into racing, business and sponsorship marketing. He is a true legend in the racing world and a true gentleman.

Solar Velocity works with motorsports teams to provide outstanding creative, design, website and marketing collateral for their teams and sponsor organizations.

As Gas Prices Drive Shoppers to the Web, Solar Velocity Directs That Traffic to Client Sites with Innovative Online Advertising

clock September 29, 2008 11:15 by author Admin

As high gas prices encourage more consumers to shop online, Solar Velocity has implemented a record number of eCommerce sites for clients to direct that increased traffic to their online stores to shop in the comfort of their homes. One such success is Wi-Ex (www.wi-ex.com), who has built a formidable eCommerce presence online which sells directly to customers, allows customer service to place orders for customers and service their dealer network. Wi-Ex sells a suite of innovative appliances and accessories for extending the range of your cell phone while at home to provide better in-building coverage.

Sharon Cuppett, EVP of Marketing for Wi-Ex, said “Our online system developed and maintained by Solar Velocity has given us the ability to expand our reach and sales with a more reasonable amount of investment than building brick and motor stores. We can also respond quicker to the needs of our retailers and distributors by streamlining the order process through one online portal. Our marketing and sales efforts are heavily weighted to online promotion and it has been a great growth engine for our business.”

Personalized URLs (PURLs), adver-games, social networking, viral marketing, microsites, opt-in advertising, and other innovative and measurable methods are being employed by Solar Velocity clients to generate eCommerce sales, while promoting and strengthening the company brand.

The current U.S. average for a gallon of gasoline is $4.11, prompting more and more consumers to pick up their mouse, rather than pick up their keys and drive to a local retailer, according to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive. One-third of the 2,363 adults surveyed stated that the high price of gasoline was the determining factor for shifting their shopping habits from traditional brick and mortar locations to online eCommerce stores.

Many consumers are aware of the sales tax savings (in most states) and the advantage of easy comparative pricing research on the Internet. But many respondents stated that lower prices also influenced them to shop online.

High on the list of survey respondents were these additional benefits:

  • The convenience of shopping from home, any time, day or night (61%)
  • Many online retailers offer free shipping promotions (55%)

In 2005, only 5% of those who participated in The Nielsen Company’s Homescan Survey said that higher gas prices influenced their decision to shop more on the Internet. That number tripled to 15% in December 2007.

Todd Hale, SVP of Consumer Shopping & Insights, Nielsen Consumer Panel Services said: “Unlike 2005 and 2006, gas prices didn’t drop in the fourth quarter of 2007 to enable consumers to do their typical holiday binge buying. That said, our research shows a jump in consumers shopping on the Internet as a way to deal with high gas prices. This should be a wake-up call for manufacturers and retailers alike to step up their ‘direct-to-consumer’ efforts and utilize the Internet to communicate directly with consumers in 2008, emphasizing value, variety and convenience”.

What this means is there is a big opportunity for companies to connect with more and more online consumers and take advantage of the variety of exciting new advertising methods, such as interactive banners, pay per click, targeted keyword landing pages; the opportunities are endless. If companies don’t jump on this eCommerce wave now, they will be left treading water while their competitors surf right past them.

Solar Velocity LLC is becoming a regular on a lot of "top" and "best of" lists. Not only does the company top the small employer category of the 2007 Atlanta's Best Places To Work, but last year the Chronicle named it a Top Web Designer and Developer. In 2004, 2005 and 2006, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce designated Solar Velocity a Top 25 Business of the Year, and Goldline Research dubbed it one of its Top 10 Most Dependable Web Design Firms in the Southeast.

"Lists are great, but we really want to provide value to the clients," says Jason Swenk, co-founder and CEO of Solar Velocity. Swenk and Solar Velocity's co-founder and chief operating officer, Kirby Winters, launched the technology and marketing company in 1999. Specializing in marketing and Web technologies, Solar Velocity's client list includes Aflac Inc., BellSouth Corp., BP Amoco Chemical Co. and Crystal Springs (owned by DS Waters of America Inc.).
